The concept for Consumerealm arrived well in advance of the name. I made a pitch deck without a cover slide, gave a class presentation in extremely vague terms, and told some of my closest confidants that I was “thinking of becoming a writer.”
I even hired a videographer to help promote my new publication without having as much as a logo or brand name.
But eventually, I needed to go from 0 to 1.
Who better to help with this exercise than OpenAI?
Firing up ChatGPT, I asked it to “Suggest some names for a new publication that I am going to introduce soon.” I continued, “The focus is on consumer trends, new brands, interesting people, and innovation. Make sure the name includes the word consumer.”
The first round included these names…
The Consumer Chronicles
Consumer Insights Weekly
The Consumer Radar
The New Consumerista
Consumer Currents
Consumer Perspectives
The Consumer Explorer
The Consumer Insider
The Consumer Collective
The Consumer Spotlight
The Consumer Quest
Consumer Conversations
The Consumerist Chronicles
The Consumer Intelligence Report
The Consumer Pulse
It was a solid start. I liked consumerista but it sounded a bit like fashionista, which sounded feminine, and I wanted a gender neutral name. I have a fondness for alliteration so options 1, 5, 9, 12 and 13 were enticing, but they all seemed lengthy. I wanted something that was (ideally) less than 12-15 total characters so that the url wouldn’t be annoyingly long to type out.
So then I said, “Now suggest more names that don’t have to include the word consumer.”
And it gave me these…
Trend Trail
The Innovators' Beat
People & Progress
The Modern Movement
The Next Wave
Emerging Voices
Rise & Shine
The Momentum
The Trendsetters' Hub
New Horizons
Visionary Visions
The Brand Buzz
The Zeitgeist Gazette
Disruptive Digest
The Curious Observer
I was less optimistic that GPT had value to offer me at this point. I mean, visionary visions?! Thanks but no thanks.
But I tried again. “What about some names that reference different ideas in art, style, and culture?”
Which returned these suggestions:
The Avant-Garde Gazette
The Aesthetic Almanac
The Culture Clubhouse
The Modern Muse
The Creative Cognoscenti
The Chic Chronicles
The Artisanal Advocate
The Stylistic Spectrum
The Bohemian Bulletin
The Fashionable Frontier
The Eclectic Epoch
The Artful Ascent
The Cultured Canvas
The Fashionista Frenzy
The Pop-Culture Post
Those weren’t bad. But again, they were kind of long. So I asked, “What about one word names?”
Sure, here are some one-word name ideas:
Trendscape
Insightio
Innovatek
Pulsar
Voxly
Artifex
Boldly
Omnify
Nexis
Cultiv8
Fluxion
Vizionary
Impulse
Shiftly
Elevate
At this point, I began my own brainstorm. I was stuck on consumocracy, which I liked 7/10. It was a reference to voting with dollars and purchasing power residing with consumers. Plus, the election cycle is coming and the -ocracy ending was likely to have some positive SEO value. So I went back and asked for synonyms.
“What about words that are similar to consumacracy?”
This time, it got juicy.
While "Consumacracy" is not a commonly used word, here are some words that are similar in sound or concept:
Consumertopia
Consumerville
Consumernation
Consumerville
Consumertarian
Consuming Cultures
Consumpocracy
ConsumeSphere
Consumestry
Consumorphosis
Consumemania
Consumerealm
Consummentality
Consumertism
Consuming Communities
And there it was. Consumerealm. It immediately resonated with me. I checked to see if the Instagram handle was available. Yes! And so was the domain. When I realized that the last two letters were my initials, that really sealed the deal. It was meant to be.
So here we are. All the love to the 🤖 and the people that make them brilliant brainstorm bots!
